No matter how good your selection seems to be, sometimes the edges still look a little too "hard" when you look at the object on top of its new background. Here's a simple way to soften the edges of anything on its own layer.

In this example I've used a couple of images from istockphoto.com, and made a fairly quick selection of the 2 kids before dragging them on to the new background image of the billboard. As you can see, the edges look a little artificial.

It's important to note that I did not use any feathering on the original selection. Many people often suggest feathering the selection before dragging it into a new document, and that works okay most of the time. However, the only "danger" is that you cannot easily "lower" the amount of feathering. This technique lets you have a little more control over the amount of softening after the fact.

The steps are located on proceeding pages.
