In this simple turorial, I will try to explain a basic way of turning day into night. There are most likely many ways to do it, but I have had a bit of success using this simple method. Keep in mind that each individual image will have different quirks that may need a different approach. This tutorial is not meant to be a formula that will be work with every image, but is intended to set you on the right path if you have never attempted a day to night transition.

Here is the image I have started with. The lamps are not quite right for the pic because I have inserted them, but we will change them later on.

White House

Basically what we will do is the following:
  1. Make a few copied layers in case we need them.
  2. Make everything a desaturated blue and darken the image, giving some contrast.
  3. Alter or replace the sky.
  4. Some tweaking.
  5. Sharpening and final adjustments

Note there will be some simple painting along the way, but I am no painter so do not expect anything elaborate.

OK lets get started. CTRL-A to select all and CTRL-J two times to make a couple of copies. Call one of the new layers "BLUE SCENE", and the other "backup" You can then turn off the visibility of it by clicking the eyeball. We may not need it, but it can be nice to have in case we mess up the other. This is a good time to save with the layers intact.
