Create a new document. File > New (Ctrl + n for the PC or Command + n on the Mac).
Choose the dimensions you would like and select a white background.

Create a new layer; Layer > New > Raster Layer or click the new layer icon from the palette.

Grab the Brush (B) tool and click on the Brush Styles drop-down (number 1 in the image above), then click on the Preferences Menu (number 2 in the image above) and load the brush sets you require.

At the end of the tutorial, I have given some links to sites with lots of downloadable brushsets. Photoshop brushes are in .abr format. If you download them you have may have to extract them (if they are zip or rar) into your Photoshop folder under Presets -> Brushes. Do this before loading Photoshop.

Click on the brushes you want and then choose append, to add them to the brush palette.

Choose your foreground color. I used a red/brown color of #856668/RGB 133-102-104. You should use a soft color, nothing too dark and not too strong.
