Enhancing animal images

Are there any tutorials out there that deal strictly with optimizing animal images (specifically dogs)? I have been messing with trying to enhance highlights using lab mode to select highlights and enhancing them that way, but how do I make fur look good on fair, but not so excellent quality images? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Keep trying all the techniques you know for (initially) global image editing on photographs e.g. contrast, tones, highlights.

Have you checked out any of the books authored by Dan Margulis ?
He has some work covering LAB mode.
