hopefully someone else has had this problem and can help. Just yesterday I installed service pack 2 on WIN XP Pro, along with a gazillion other updates. ( In the past I could not run SP2, because it would not allow me to send data to our printer.) With our newer rip software I can now use SP2, and can actually print now, but...

Illustrator (CS2) is crashing like crazy now. Almost always it is when I try to zoom in/out with keyboard commands or if I use the space bar to move my view ( hand tool) .

I have tried deleting the prefs files...no luck. I have tried reinstalling...no luck. I have tried logging on under another account...no luck. Under Windows firewall setting I have given permission for Illustrator to do what it wants...no luck. I have checked and all of the Adobe updates are current with no new ones available.

It really has been a frustrating day. I'm to the point where I may just do a restore back to SP1, but if I could fix it, it seems to make sense to keep the updates.

Any help would be ENORMOUSLY appreciated, as I have enough grey hair!

Running anything like Office or Quickbooks? You might want to update those as well. They have an issue with not releasing shortcut keys.. it's about the only thing I can think of.

Never heard of quickbooks, but I do have ms office, I can try it...thanks so much Scott. I sure wish there was a Windows version of you here...we'd have the problem licked in no time.

You kind of remind me of the present Mac commercials on TV, where the Mac guy is really laid back, and has everything running smooth so he can just easily play, and the Windows guy always has some kind of problem...the whole series is great I think, and they pull it off with simple sets and unknown actors...nice to see creativity without the use of celebrities.

It is times like these that I wish I had grown up on Mac.

Cough***traitor***Cough.

Cough***macwannabe***cough.

Ahem.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. It really sucks when the puter is working against you and you can't throw it out the window because you'll just have to buy a new one.

If troubles persist -- try my old standby: go to a graveyard at midnight, swing a dead (emphasis on DEAD -- cause the live ones are too hard to swing) cat over your head 9 times chanting "Begone computer demons...BEGONE!" This may not actually accomplish anything but it will make you feel better.

I ACTUALLY wanted to let you know that I am running SP2 on XP Home and have had no issues at all with any Adobe (PS or Illustrator or Dreamweaver) stuff. Nothing at all. I also use the full MS Office suite.

here is something i found:
Upgrade an HP computer to Service Pack 2 and it crashes

We always recommend standard PCs for business, because of the total cost of ownership. Here's an example of a PC that is cool, but doesn't follow our reasoning.

A client has an older HP/Compaq laptop, with all kinds of cool video/TV inputs. She upgraded to XP SP2, just as she should have... However, it crashed her computer. It has STOP ERROR c0000135

But, it's not Microsoft's fault. The bug is in the driver for the video/TV inputs. HP says that you have to upgrade those drivers, before installing Service Pack 2. See their article here.

There's no way that the client could know about HP's instructions ahead of time. In our opinion, HP should have produced better drivers for their software from the beginning.

JK TECH SOLUTION: Regardless of blame, in order to fix the problem, we have uninstall the bad version of Service Pack 2 by following Microsoft's instructions (here). Then, we have to follow HP's instructions (here) and then upgrade to Service Pack 2 via Microsoft's upgrade site.

just donīt know what kind of computer you have.

maybe it would really help if you look into start -> systeminfo -> administration (maintenance) -> eventviewer and there go to application.

there lies windows mistakemanager :) sorry i donīt have an english windows at hand to search for the right translations.

but maybe there you can see what really causes cs to crash.

Thanks so much everyone. I never did have any luck so I have uninstalled service pack 2 and I am back in business. David, I may try the graveyard routine sometime:)

Alice, thanks, I may check into that if I ever get my head above water. The PC I use at work is a Dell. At home I am like David and have no problems with SP2 and Illustrator (WIN XP home).

For now, I am just happy to have Illustrator working again.
