View Full Version : Gonna take the Plunge!

I've been doing a lot of research, in the attempt to find a reasonably priced DSLR. I've been developing quite a little side business doing advertising brochures for Engineering, Land Surveying and Architectural firms, as well as "We're Moving" cards, some "Open House" flyers, a couple of business cards here and there. I find I needed a better camera to get pics of projects "in progress", etc.
So, I've ordered This little cookie (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=438940&is=REG&addedTroughType=search).
There are so many pluses, plus after their merge with Minolta, the Zeiss lenses are compatable.
The reviews are terrific.
I can't wait!

Nice camera you picked out there. I hope you'll be using it for more than just business. ;)

Ooooh tax deductible too! :)

Thanks, guys - Now I'll have to enter some of Happy's great photo contests, and maybe have some hope of placing higher than botttttttom ;) Hey, I know it's the camera operator, not the camera, but I've been working on that too.
Woo-hoo!

It's funny what comes to mind when you hear a phrase... to me 'taking the plunge' means getting hitched :married:, so was expecting to see lots of rice being tossed about in here... instead, it's an equally long-term committment from the electronics department!
Very nice! I hope you two will be very happy together and that you bring lots of joy into the world, capturing all the special moments... ;)
Looking forward to seeing your work in the contests and gallery!

Looks like a great camera Joanie, it's getting rave reviews everywhere. You'll soon be walking away with the photo contest as well as the photoshop ones!

I understand about 2 days - ground UPS - but I don't expect it till sometime next week. And not too soon, either............. :) I'd saved up about $350 to go towards it, but husband and sons informed me they were paying the rest for anniversary and birthday (only 3 days apart) So they also got the UV lens filter, 1 GB memory card, extra rechargable battery and camera case. I am so lucky to have such great guys. And, my daughter in law is taking me to the beach (just girls) to photograph. She's fabulous, as well!

Wow! That's fantastic! Sometimes there's the downside of having two celebrations so close together... that, however doesn't seem to be the case this year! :)
What a set up! Hope you have a lot of fun with it! :)

Ummm, I think I'll stay away from the girls on the beach. Somehow, it just doesn't interest me ;) Now, the guys in their wetsuits (water temperature is icy), that's a different matter. Actually, I want to go to the natural sea aquarium, and a sand castle competition, as well as rocks, boats, lighthouses, and the Lewis and Clark encampment at Fort Stevens. Do you think that's too much for one weekend? LOL

As long as you stay away from the guys in the wets suits you should just about manage!
Actually it sounds like a great weekend, lot's of photo ops.
Do you get whales going by yet?

No, the whale watch is a little later in the Fall/Winter. And that is fabulous to see, especially if you arrange a charter especially for that. You have to cross over the Astoria Bar, which is rated the most dangerous in the world, to get the really good view, although there are places ashore to see through telescopes. They are massive creatures, but also graceful and really elegant to watch.
The winter whale watch week coincides with the migration of gray whales from Alaskan seas to lagoons in Mexico where they mate and give birth to calves in the warm waters off Baja, California.

Used to love whale watching when I lived on the southern Oregon coast. Sit on a bluff overlooking the ocean watching for spouts, sometimes have a picnic lunch... never saw one breach in all that time... still enjoyable.

I had to smile at the thought of some nice Oregon beach shots of some hot babes. Probably showing off the latest in natural fabric sweaters.
So why did you chose the Sony over the Digital Rebel? I'm getting near my next camera upgrade and it seems everyone raves about the Rebel which is about the same price.

Nice! Congrads enjoy it and make sure to insure it.

It's so new there aren't a lot of user reviews. They are very comparable, pricewise. Here's the best comparison i've found DPReview (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos300d%2Csony_dslra100&show=all). I think what sold me was the image stabilization with the anti-shake technology, plus the auto sensor cleaner at power off! Evidently the noise at 1600 is high, but how often do you shoot at that speed?
pdames
08/28/2006, 11:47 AM
believe me you will start shooting at that speed more often know. Things like birds flying bye, cars driving bye. HA!!!!

It arrived - today, our anniversary! (believe me this is both anniv and birthday) I am so excited I can hardly stand it. Charging the battery as I type. Wonderfully comfortable grip. As I read more and experiment, I'll let you know! "mega-giggle".

Super terrific. Now you can take pics of your anniversary dinner (or some door photos for the contest.)
Btw - Happy Anniversary!
who said you could giggle - and a mega one yet!

I will tell you why. Customer service. Canon SUCKS at customer service. I have been without my Rebel XT for nearly a month now waiting for them to figure out what is wrong with my camera. And that was after months of begging for help on the phone, web, email, and any other means I could contact them by.
You made a wise choice. My only question is what lenses go with the camera? Do third party vendors sell lenses for it yet?
Jaygre
08/30/2006, 04:46 PM
It (sony) has merged with Minolta, so all of their lenses, plus the Carl Zeiss lenses. Not all are available yet, but a fair number are.

Thank you dear friends for all the congrats. I consider myself to be a most fortunate woman, to have a husband who constantly amazes and delights me, and my dearest friend!
So, also here's the very first pic. (And I haven't even read the manual yet  )
Jaygre
08/30/2006, 09:00 PM
Surprisingly the manual isn't massive, and fairly easy to read. But there's a whole host of support material with the installation CD, that's very intuitive.
And here's a quick pic of our little rescued kitten named Smokey. Unbelievable, but this camera is very fast, as this little guy never sits still except to have his tummy rubbed. We'ver never had indoor pets, all dogs were outsiders, but this little guy was soooo sick. We're training him to be both out and in, but he's too small yet to be out with the owls, hawks and eagles, not to mention coyotes, except when we're out. In at night ;)

Great shots! Love the flower pic! And the tail on your cat looks about as long as your cat himself!
My youngest cat, now about 8 I think, was a rescue... took the longest time to tame her down, she was so skittish that she'd hide everytime someone came in the door... now, you can't keep her off your lap! Very friendly/personable!
Anyway, thank you for sharing your pictures, very sharp, clear and vibrant!
Nice pics Joanie. I love the flower, can you come take some of our roses?
But put the camera down for 5 minutes and have something to eat! :)

Congratulations and happy aniversery. Nice shots. Image stabilization is a great feature, especially when you're trying to shoot some hand-held shots. The only thing it doesn't have that I like is time lapse, but all-around I like your choice. Sounds like you're having a ball.
