Hi all, I'm failry new to PA (discovered via "Photoshop TV" podcast (thanks guys!)) and have entered two contests so far. I'm interested to know how long on average you guys take to create a competition entry? So far I have taken around 2-3 hours each to create my submissions(for Freestyle and Beginners).
Be interesting I hope for others to know, apologies if a post like this exists already!
All I know is I'm hooked, bring on the next contest!

The 'choppin' itself takes me around 1 to 2 hours (in most cases). But what is most time-consuming is finding source pics. Not when you have a fairly simple idea with famous work (ie my plane entry, that took 5 seconds to find the vitruvius man :)), but now I'm looking for paintings to enter the Art Imitates Real Life 3 contest. An hour has past and I still got nothing. *Browsing through paintings. 'I could turn him into a DJ'. Looking for DJ pics, finding nothing. Searching for a new idea...*.

Always varies of course, but I usually spend more time looking for source pics than the actual chop. Once everything is in place, usually 1-2 hours max. Some shorter, and rarely, some much longer.
that is what I like so much about FF contests, most of the work is done...I like to work with just the single source pic if I can as a challenge, some of course you pretty much have to use others.
All in all it depends on how much time I have, but in general 2 hours start to finish.

A few hours to do it, and then at least another whole day to upload it, stare at it and then reupload it about 10 more times when I see more things to fiddle with... I think I am an bit of a neurotic chopper.

Me too libra. I think the Hallowe'en entry was the worst. I must have tweaked it a dozen times or so. I bet Jolt was cursin' at me somethin' awful that day.

*bump*
holy smokes! I've only had a couple of entries where I've come in under an hour or two! Most take longer (needing to get the skill up and time down!) But as the others have stated, the most time is spent looking for source pics to work with, getting perspective, mood right is challenging, but fortunately not always impossible!.
I am looking forward to the day when I can spend only a couple of hours on a piece so as to be able to use the rest of my life for other things... have to get material for inspiration somewhere!

Six or seven minutes.
If it's difficult.

Ahem.

Wow David.. now the username makes sense... that's Magic!
:)
I spend about an hour tops.
It really all depends on your idea... the contest and your proficiency with Photoshop.

I try to limit my editing time to one hour max, and where possible, like to take my own photographs, but a six month free membership I won from graphics.com for ablestock.com really comes in handy when I can't photograph what I want. :)
The longest time I spent on an entry, was seven hours, only to have the contest pulled a couple hours before the deadline due to lack of potential participation. :(
I try not to be an emotionally charged artist, but my Wacom nearly went out the window that evening.
:)
P.S. I heard rumor that the PA database was affected somehow by that millennium bug, and the highest attainable score for Hall of Fame is 133 points, currently held by Silky and Scott.
Rumor also has it, that when all members reach the magic 133 point barrier, war and world hunger will suddenly disappear. So get cracking folks, especially you members who always vote, but have never entered a contest. :)

Sounds like we need a tie- breaker workd series best of seven style contest ...
contest to include at least one photograph, one vector illustration, one freehand drawing or painting ....

Yeah...that's it.
I can see it now: All the PA members peeking out, through the curtains at a dusty street. Then -- from the silence: the slow confident "ka-CHING" of Scott's spurs as he steps into the street, a Wacom under one arm -- a laptop under the other. Steely eyes look up and down the street.
An Italian Western soundtrack starts to play. (Italian western soundtracks are always spelled like this "Waaaa...waaa....")
A soft rustle of petticoats announces the arrival of Silky. She is stepping out of the saloon, the swinging doors going "thwack thwack" behind her. There's determination in those eyes. There's purpose in her step. There's wi-fi in her laptop.
People scurry for cover.
Dave steps onto the street, sweating profusely under his worn grey bowler hat. He is waving a hanky with his 6,000+ postings.. He drops it and the contest begins.
A battle like no other........a definitive showdown. Two titans -- toe to creative toe...
The picture -- the content: Do something amazing with a picture of DON KING -- the promoter of this little battle.
Oooooooo....

Do Cage matches affect the Hall of Fame?
We can't have TWO first place Hall of Famers, it's undemocratic. Heck, it would be worth starting a war over in the States.
Can we force a cage match? You know, everyone chip in 1000 credits, or something like that?
Do Cage matches affect the Hall of Fame?
Err no they don't

The king is dead, Long live the King.
The Queen is dead, Long live the Queen.
"There can be only one."
Well, for average wins per entry, Silky is leading, but alphabetically, Scott prevails. :)
Silky
08/20/2006, 04:40 PM
HEY! I'm still the leader...he wins simply because his name comes first alphabetically! I do indeed have the higher average...so there, Mr. Scott Weichert, smarty pants, poo-poo head! :D
Scott
08/20/2006, 04:41 PM
Yeah.. it's always second place that argues why they should be first :)
Silky

Oh bite me...you and your stupid letter "c" in your name...butthead! :)

Now Now, It's Silky not Sulky. :)
Besides Scott, rumor has it, she's changing her name to Aardvark Silky. :)
"Byte me?", okay, maybe instead of Aardvark, she could be Apple?

It's so great when maturity prevails! Calmer minds and sweet words that soothe...
so until then, I guess it's down to magic's scenario... the scene is set and the lady's fighting words... 'poo-poo head!' Classic, absoultely classic. :)
(oh and on a topical note, was reading in issue 19 of Advanced Photoshop where a gal works weeks, sometimes months on a piece... so I take solice in that when I spent a few hours this morning editing a pic I thought I'd finished last night, but not entirely pleased with). Some people have the gift and talent for speed and quality... I'm finding that, with enough time I can achieve both... um... yeah... okay...)

I don't think you are allowed to use words like "poo poo head" and "butthead" online. Are you?
Someone should talk to an admin about that.
..................................................oh.
Never mind.

Aw man, does that sound familar!
I have no idea how long I spend. I enter a timeless rhelm when I start choppin'. I know the nasty torn photo restorations took at least 10 hours each.
