It's finally that time. I'll be on vacation all this week in Puerto Rico visiting family and getting lost in the Rain Forests and towns. Tonight will be my last night lurking around the forums and tomorrow will be spent primarily packing and getting ready.

I'll be back on the 12th. Until then, behave! :.

Ooooooooh...Puerto Rico! Where is your family located, PDG? My grandparents lived there for several years while my grandfather was in the military....it was called Ramey Air Force Base then, and I have no idea if it's even still there! They tell many stories about trips to El Moro, Aguadilla, and Mayaguez (I think that's how it's spelled).

Lucky you! Enjoy the vacation!

I'll be staying in Carolina which is a few miles away from San Juan. The actual trip will be one of discovery more than anything else. Our last trip 2 years ago involved getting familiar. Now that we're more comfortable, I plan to drive all over the island and see everything possible.

One day we may move out there but for now Miami is ok. The people of Puerto Rico are very kind and genuinely sweet. I swear the police are actually there to help! Every cop we ran into over there struck conversation with us and ended up being a character. Most will help you fix a flat tire which is unheard of in Miami.

I heard about the bases in PR. One controversial one was on the island of Viequez and used for bombing. It also happened to have one of the few phosphorescent bays in the world. You can actually dive at night and you're surrounded by a natural bioluminescence (http://www.gotopuertorico.com/go_natureAdventure.php?language=english&page=66). Needless to say, the military was given the boot and now Viequez is thriving. We hope to visit it on our trip.

You got all your names right! We're really excited. I plan to take gigabytes of pics and abuse Smugmug like a wench. ;)

I remember my grandmother telling us that while they were there, they could walk about a block down their street to stand on a cliff overlooking the ocean. She said the water was so warm down there that they could sit for hours watching whales (apparently it was a very popular whale mating area). It sounded so beautiful! She also told us of the not so beautiful areas...like the little shacks that people built on the sides of hills to live in. I know this was all years ago, and I'm sure that the towns have all grown a great deal since then. I just know she always spoke of her time there with excitement at being in such a friendly and diverse surrounding. I envy you your trip and would love to see your pictures when you get back!

Have a fantastic time!
