I am ready to add an external flash and need a telephoto lens for my Rebel XT. I've been looking around, but was wanting to get some expert advise before I make the final purchase(s). Any suggestions?????

Let's see, for flashes Canon has the 550ex and the 580ex. The 580ex is the newest model and costs around $400-$500 the 550ex should be less since it's a little older model. The only significant difference between the 2 is the refresh rate between flashes. Down side is that it may be hard to find a new 550ex in stores because the 580ex was it's replacement and they replaced the 550ex. Next step down is the 430ex it has less flash range the the 550 or the 580, but is rock soild. Only real downside is the ease of use. the 580 uses a fly wheel set-up that makes getting through the menus much easier the the 430ex which use a button system I believe. One other down side is the refresh rate is even slower than the 550 which will slow you down if you're taking rapid fire photos. Sigma also makes a flash that is similar to the 550ex called the Ef 500 DG super is Sigma's answer to the 550. Plus it's almost $300 cheaper than the 550.

As for the telephoto, how afr out do you want to be Jen?????

Basically across a basketball court. I was looking at the 75-300's??? I think that should be fine. I have a similar one for my old minolta. I'm just not sure which one would be best for my needs. I don't shoot for a living - just for school and fun. Would the slower one suit my needs or should I spend the extra $??? Is it worth it (or would I even notice the differece)?????
