I'm going to buy a Lacie Hard Drive. They suggest buying a Lacie Firewire 400 PCI Card. WTF is that, and do I need one?

What computer are you using?

G5s have a Firewire 400/800 ports. So no card is needed.

Basically a firewire 400 PCI card is a card that goes inside the computer to add basic firewire ports. Does your machine already have a firewire port? If so, you don't need the card.

400/800 indicate the two speeds of firewire connections (similar to USB 1 and 2). 400 being the original and 800 a second speed. Firewire 800 will read 400 connects. But 400 ports won't read 800 connections well.

I have a G5 so looks like I'm good to go without the card. Woo hoo.
