I just learned in "Outdoor Photographer" about a cool new function in CS2: High Dynamic Range.
You take a series of exposures at one-stop intervals then merge them with the High Dynamic Range tool. The best parts of the shadows, midtones and highlights are kept giving much more detail in the shadows and highlights. Apparently the resulting picture is somewhat flat in contrast, but this can be fixed with the normal adjustment tools in PS.
