How come when I open an .ai file in PS, the saved placed objects are not shown?
I am trying to down-play my usual panic, but, I have an approved graphic that the printers are waiting for, but first I need to send a jpg proof to be approved. HELP!!!

Why are you opening it in Photoshop?
File > Save for web in Illustrator.

Chris- in Illustrator 10.3 I only have 4 "save as" options .ai, .pdf, .svg, .svgz. It is a really good possibility I have some preference setting skewed!
Jolt- Good Lord, I never looked (just looked) at the "save for web" option..I feel like such a loser! Imagine the time I can save!!
Why are you opening it in Photoshop?
This one client goes into a major melt down when she receives ANY format other than a.jpg.

Just remember one thing...
When you ask a question, no matter how obvious the answer, there are probably at least a dozen people who are just as amazed at the answer as you are. There are no dumb questions...not here anyway. :D

So back to "placed objects" issue. I sent a pdf to the client. They proofed it & okayed it, and because I know that this printer (actually an embroidery operation) doesn't use any adobe products, I thought they could work with the pdf. Well here's the email I just received from them:
we are having problems getting the art. The PDF file worked but half of the design would not generate. Can I have you try to send the file directly to firstimage@chartermi.net ? They can't open the MIM file either and we can't figure out why we are getting half of the image. Thank You Lori
So I am back to the issue of the placed objects not showing up either in my PS or for them. The original is an .ai file. Should I "flatten transparancies" or rasterize in illustrator? Kinda defeats building it in Illustrator. The placed files are psd files.
Isn't a pdf file an Adobe creation?
Cant' these wally's simply state their preferred and alternate file formats?

Okay, I did a save for web in Illustrator. And it appears that it may work. Opens everywhere for me. And yes, it looks like crap-o-la.
But I still don't understand the "placed object" issue.
"via a 28k modem I bet!" It would serve them right....grrrrrr...

Linda,
YES, ALWAYS flatten transparency if you're sending art to a vendor that doesn't use Adobe products. Transparency works but only if you know how to use it. if they don't even use Adobe products I'd doubt they know how to treat transparency within Adobe generated files.
And there are several versions of PDFs. PDF 1.3 is the Acrobat 4 version and generally the most compatible for the "general" public. PDF 1.3 does NOT support transparency though. So just saving a PDF from Illustrator you probably saved it with the defaults which are generally PDF 1.6 (for Creative Suite 2) and PDF 1.6 DOES support transparency.
If you aren't certain how PDF1.3 or the transparency flattener will effect your Illustrator file. You can either use the flatten transparency command and see what it does or just save as a v8 EPS file and it'll all be flattened as well.

Excellent advice Jolt!
But the question still remains, why won't the objects show up for me other than in Illustrator?

I can't say. Is it a linked or embedded image?
ldg40

Nope, just a plain ol' PS file placed in the artwork. I thought maybe it was because the placed images were rgb and the vector work, cmyk. But that wasn't it. Perhaps its an issue of compatability between the new (for me) CS2 and my old Ill 10.3.....

Placed Photoshop images can be either linked or embedded, Linda. Does the raster image interact with transparency in Illustrator?

Okay, I'm gonna have to ponder this question. Sounds like I should know the answer, but I don't. I need a class, I need a teacher, awe heck! it's Friday, I need a drink!

Does the raster image interact with transparency in Illustrator?
means... is there an object in illustrator which has a transparency setting such as a blending mode or a lowered opacity setting that overlaps the placed image?

One placed image is set behind the rest, but the other stands alone. The vector image is a just text with no additional attributes applied. However neither image will show up.
Dave's usual dumb suggestion - is it anything to do with where you've saved the image files, are they in the same directory? (sorry for stupidness, I'm having trouble following this at all)

Not a dumb suggestion Dave, I tried your idea first:)

When you look in the links palet is there a little drawing of a triangle and a square behind the name of the placed object? if not, you can click the black triangle in the links palet and say "embed image". it might work for you then in photoshop.
success
