Took my kids to a baseball game on Sunday, and they let them onto the field to run the bases after the game. I was rushed and I broke several photo rules, most importantly being I left their hats on. The shadows are horrible and I am having a terrible time touching the picture up without turning my kids into burn victims. I wish to learn how to do this on my own, so any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Oh Joezilla, I would help you BUT your a Kansas City Royals fan, (Go Cubs)
Ok you can use (shadow/highlight) to fix your shadows
First duplicate original then go to Image> adjustments> shadow/highlight. If your brave and want some more things to adjust then click the show more options to expand the dialog box. Just play with this and you can get some phenomenal results.
BTW: you can maskout the background if it get messed up (that's why you should duplicate the original)
hope this helps :)

Hey JZ
I hope you don't mind but I gave it a shot with a few tweaks, including the Shadow/highlight filter.

One thing not to forget even on bright sunny days is that you can use your flash as a fill flash to help get rid of the harsh shadows. Or even a bright white piece of paper to use as a reflector

Slow down... I never said I was a KC fan. Who is? Have you seen the stands? As active duty military I can get free tickets into the game, and since it was negro league day they gave everyone KC Monarchs hats for free, and each kid got a free hot dog and soda. I am a baseball fan, and a MLB game for 3 costing only $9 (Parking), well you cannot beat it.
As for the shadow/ highlights, I actually went there second (Tried histogram first). Good to know I was on the right path, just inexperienced.
Thanks everyone!!

After you do Shadow/Highlight you might want to apply a mask filled with black and then with a white brush paint in only the areas you want affected.
