I had a computer crash while working on PS last night. I saved, opened another image and it crashed. After rebooting, I expected to open my image and carry on but I can't find it anywhere. Not sure why. I thought I read somewhere, something about retrieving ps pictures that had been deleted by mistake. Was I just dreaming?

Unbelievable I had the same thing happen to me 2 days ago! I was working on a restoration, opened another image, and Photoshop crashed (not the whole computer). I reopened photoshop and went to reopen the file I was working on, which I had saved many times along the way, and it was gone! Completely vanished! Vaporized without a trace! I'd never had anything like that happen before.
My CS2 came yesterday so I'm hoping that whatever caused that freak disappearance will never happen again. But I was certainly very nervous about my work disappearing until then.
Sorry to say I don't have a shred of help to offer you, but you're not dreaming.

Have you ran a search for the file (name) that you saved, it might not be where you thought it was?

I know for certain that PS temp files don't contain any retrievable information (more's the pity), as Dave suggests, try doing a search for part of the name. You could also try searching for all files modified or created on the day - you'll have to sift through a lot of system files and other such nonsense but if it's there, it should show up.

Probably know this, but one way to narrow the search would be to do a search for all .psd files if you know it was that file extension. Type in *.psd in the search window. You can do the same with .jpg files too. You'll have more to search for with .jpg files. Type in *.jpg to find all of those on your system.
I remember at one time (probably under and old OS) you could refine the search somewhat with time parameters as well as file extensions, it all depends on what your OS is I guess.
