illustrator question

(newby question here) Hey I was wondering what tool I should use if I'm trying to adjust the handles on a point. I try to move one handle but the handle on the opposite side follows it. Is there anyway I can have one handle stay were it is but move the other? hope this makes sense. :)

Use the pen tool and the direct selection tool.

Highlight the node you want to alter with the direct selection tool (the white arrow), the handles light up. Now grab the bezier pen tool. Hold down option/alt and you can click-drag the bezier handles independently of each other..

Aha! thanks jolt. I knew it was right in front of me somewhere. This will make things a lot easier.

make sure you don't hit the alt key when the two bezier handles are disconnected for they will connect again if you do so.
