I'm trying to do a "screen print". My keyboard command doesn't seem to work. I have XP - When doing a tutorial, how do you go about doing this and can you selectively choose WHAT you want to print in that mode?

Any suggestions MOST welcome!

Normally with XP, I hit the PrtScr button then pop open Photoshop, create a new document (the settings will reflect your current screen resolution) and CTRL+V to paste. If you want to highlight only a smaller pop up window, you could do ALT+PrtScr. These are the only 2 methods available in Windows. Anything else will require the help of a screenprint utility like GrabIt.

Does this help?

So when you hit the screen print button - you are talking about the one on your keyboard. I can't seem to get it to work. Is there an alternate function key that creates that command as well. Maybe I need to get out my documentation and search for it.

EDIT: OK, I did as exactly you stated and DID GET a SCREEN PRINT on my new doc. I'll play with it. So I guess it takes the picture and I HAVE TO PASTE it into my doc. RIGHT?

exactly. the PrtScr key is very cryptic. it doesn't give you any feedback or confirmation that the screen print was taken. but it will paste.

I have always used ALT+PRNTSCRN, works for me (used on 3.1-xp)

The print screen button is a legacy from the days when computers were dumb terminals hooked up to a mainframe, which really did a screen dump.

There are a lot of good shareware programs which hijack the key and can save a copy of the image to the hard-drive.

A friend developed a short program to not only capture the screen but also to select and capture any part of the screen. The program is free and I have been using it for a couple of years. It is fast and allows you to save as much or as little of the screen as you wish.

If you are interested go to the following site:

The program is named Screen2JPG and it can be found under his general heading of:

Image Management Program Set 2

I know that you will find it most helpful and the price is right.
