Pattern Contest Question

I really like how some folks used images and overlayed them on the subject, but still kept the subjects shape, form, detail, etc. How would I go about doing this. Would you multiply, or overlay the actual layer? Did they have to start with the image as black & white then add the overlay? If anyone would like to answer my question please do. I really like the lizard that likes Dahli and the american eagle.

as far as i know there are different methodes, and not everyone works on the same picture as good as on another, sometimes it´s also good to have a bumpmap of the picture or some color overlays, also depends on what pattern you wanted to give the picture. But as i think the important point is to have a good layer mask.

As i promised in the tutorial request forum i´m going to make a tut for this pattern thing, i hope this will solve some questions about it :)
