help with extracting

I've been trying to do some extracting using the method described in this tutorial http://www.pixeladdiction.com/bb/tutorials.php?aid=14&page=1&topic= and when i select my picture and i draw around it with the lasso and i mask it ... it all works BUT when i get to the step where i go in a duplicate the red channel and then change it to selection and it is supposed to invert the colors...it doesn't always do it. Some times it does and sometimes it doesnt...what could that be? The duplicating part works fine but the inverting doesn't at all>??? HELPPP

Hi, paintballer, if the inversion doesn't happen, simply hold down control (or command on the Mac) and hit the i key on the keyboard. That will invert the channel.
