I just lost all my votes and comments and time due to me not selecting 'View All' before voting. My bad, yes, but is there a way to prevent this?

You can vote a single page at a time. If you'd gotten to the bottom of the page and submitted your votes, you wouldn't have lost them...and it would have taken you to page two. If you vote on page 1 and then get to the bottom decide you want to view all, then you'll lose what you've already done. So, I guess the solution is, if you get to the bottom of the page and have forgotten to select "view all" just go ahead and submit what you've already done. It's better than losing it all.

My preference is to view each entry on a seperate page (just click on the first image), vote on it, comment if I wish then submit and move to the next page. I also have the full view window open for each image.

When I've finished I go through them all again to make sure I submitted all my votes as I do forget to hit submit once in a while.

I didn't think to submit 'cause I normally don't until I'm done voting (View All.) It was my fault but it would be nice if this potential accident could be avoided. I was just wondering if there was an 'easy' way to fix it. Probably coding again, right? I feel for you guys.

One way or another you have to tell the computer "go" so that your votes and comments can be recorded, until your computer can read your mind I doubt your problem can be solved.

The simple truth is when you have already filled out the votes and comments one a page of entries and then switch to View All you'll lose what you've already input. We can fix a lot of things, but we can't fix what you guys do on your own. My advice...remember next time. :)

Maybe I didn't explain myself properly.
Since this is a Site Support/Suggestions thread, I simply thought, from a 'customer service' point of view, that there would be a way to avoid losing your comments if you accidentally switched to page two before hitting 'submit'. I understand that it was my fault (3rd time) but I find it frustrating to lose 30 mins. one way or another. All I was doing was making a suggestion as to the nature of the page layout (perhaps make 'view all' the default) and since I know nothing about coding, I was simply bringing up what I saw as an annoyance which, if it could be fixed, might avoid other users feeling this disappointment. I didn't mean for this to be anything more than bringing a point to the attention of the site admins which could (in a very small way) negatively influence the enjoyment level of said users on this otherwise very enjoyable site. If this point is worth considering, fine, if not, also fine. I won't make the same mistake again, but someone else might and might not notice it, therefore getting DQ'd and not knowing why. This 'potential' situation was, in my view, worth avoiding if at all possible, and worth bringing to the attention of those who would have to deal with it. That is all. Thank you for your attention. :.

The only other option would be to automatically submit your vote whenever it's cast, so the page would refresh with each and every vote.

...which means you couldn't change it if need be, I see. Looks like a headache! Let's just forget I mentioned it then. Thanks.

I've lost my votes before. I don't like to submit until I've voted on all the entries because I want to be sure the one I think is best gets my highest score, and then once in a while I'll screw it up and lose them. I'm getting more careful. Hopefully it won't happen to you again.

You really shouldn't compare the images to each other. You should look at each image on it's own and cast a vote for it. So it really doesn't matter if you see all the images.

I know it seems that this would be the best way to vote, but in these types of contests each image really should be judged on its own merits. We try to stress that to everyone who votes, because in all honesty it's really the only fair way to vote. If there are two striking images in one contest, both as perfect as possible, why should one be voted lower than the other? They should both be given the highest marks...because they both deserve it. I really don't think there's a good and fair way to compare images to each other which is why the voting scale should be applied to each and every image, individually, without any regard to the other images in the contest.

Stepping off my soapbox now. :)

What Silky said, we don't ask you to rank the photos in order just give them the vote they deserve individually.

I agree. If I think there are two equally the best, I'll give them each the same high score. Now that I've been judging more, I'm developing a better, more consistant idea of what 8 means, and so on. At first though, I was voting the entries as compared to each other, lining them up from best to worst, then giving them scores. I still like to check that my scoring works out that way.

I did read the voting guide (more than once), but it takes time to incorporate it with consistancy.

usually i view all the pages and entries before i start voting on them, then i go back to the first one after seeing them all and start voting and viewing more in depth

Is there a way to tell if we voted on every entry in a contest?

Yes. Just go back into the contest and under each entry you should see "HariSeldon, you have already voted on this entry." If you don't see that, but see the voting buttons instead, then you haven't voted on that entry.
