Just so that the 'powers that be' know...;) down2earth2 and myself are discussing doing a restoration cage match and are still working on the details.

We haven't decided if we are going to work on the same image or not.... but on my side any advice on where to source one would be appreciated... I know down2earth2 may know of somewhere too, but I am not sure on the usage guidelines etc on stuff like that.

Right, clueless about how any of this works so please point me in the right direction.

A restoration cage match sounds great. The usage guidelines would be the same as any other image used - respect copyright. Unfortunately, there are not many public domain images that get placed on the web in a deteriated state.

My suggestion is to work on the same image. If you work on different images then the work that goes into restoring each image can't be judged against each other. If you work on the same image, you're both dealing with the same flaws, the same poor quality image, and hoping to end up with the best result.

Just my opinion. :)

Seems like our biggest need is a nasty photo to work on. Any PA members have any ideas where to find one we can use?

I have a couple of family pics you can look at. 1st is (believe it or not) Bert and Earnie, my grandfather Ernest and his cousin Bert, the second, Great Great Aunt Ida

libra

WOW Jaygre!!! What do you think about that first one d2e2? (unless you want something more doomed?)

Jaygre
03/13/2005, 10:51 AM
I found another, and there is quite an ornate border to it.
WOW Jaygre!!! What do you think about that first one d2e2? (unless you want something more doomed?)
Thanks Jaygre! Nice photos! For our cage match, the first one would do, but maybe we should wait just a bit to see if something a little more doomed turns up. Of course doing the first one would have the advantage of giving Jaygre hopefully a nice restoration of his Great Great Aunt Ida.

If we decide on the first one, maybe we should colorize it also.

Jaygre, was that heart around the horse's neck in the original photo? It almost looks too sharp, and seems like such an unlikely adornment. I really like it!

Jaygre
03/13/2005, 11:26 AM
Yup, that's part of the original picture - I may have done a little work on this and brought it out in the photo. He was quite a cowboy, and won a lot of local prizes, and this silver heart was one of them.

Just sent a polite email to a UK based restoration place on the net explaining everything and asking them nicely if they have any uncopyrighted images that we can use d2e2. They have some great examples on their website. Now I wait with anticipation to see if I hear from them.

I had these on my hard drive. If you're interested, let me know and I'll put up the full size ones. I just need to check the torn one for copyright, I'll get back to you on it. :)

Great. Way to be on the ball, Libra!
I had these on my hard drive. If you're interested, let me know and I'll put up the full size ones. I just need to check the torn one for copyright, I'll get back to you on it. :)
Thanks 1-9! That first one looks pretty tough. What do you think Libra? Should we wait until you hear back from that restoration place, and then look over our options and choose? Maybe some other PA's will turn up some more choices. It's always interesting to look at old photos.

libra
03/13/2005, 03:34 PM
I do like 1-9's first option too d2e2. It could take a while to hear back from my email as well, so we can get on with it if necessary. I have come to realise that most people work on their time when I have all the time in the world ;)

Has 1-9 checked copyright on that image? I am trying to figure out which one is the torn one that he was referring to.

The first one is ok (copyright-wise,) but I haven't found out about the second one yet (the brown one in a hundred pieces.) I think it's ok (if it's on my computer, it is normally fine) but I'd like to make sure. The one on top (first one) looks tough but has many different elements that need work and imo, would make a good challenge. I'll keep watching. :)
-edited-
I think the second is copyrighted but I just contacted the webmaster just in case. No #1 on top is ok.

So OHF... Is there anything else we should consider in setting up this cage match besides choosing the picture and setting the deadline?

Happy
03/13/2005, 04:51 PM
Let me know what picture you will be working with and fill in the missing details:

- Participants?: (someone vs. someone)
- Type of Contest: (photoshop,photography,illustration,etc.)
- Theme or Description: (Details and Descriptions)
- Submission Time? (When do entries need to be done by?)
- Will Participant's Vote? No, participants will not vote
- What are the stakes? (losatar, bragging rights, etc.)

Finally, once all the details have been determined, edit your thread title (or PM an admin) that the Cage Match is 'ready for setup'.

down2earth2
03/13/2005, 06:22 PM
I have a question about the submission time. With the time difference between England and the west coast USA, I was wondering if we could set it up for us each to start Tuesday morning in our own time zone and turn it in the next Monday night at 12 PM in our own time zone. The way we'd each have 7 full days. I don't get what the time zone problem is for the Brits exactly, but they apparently get less time somehow.

The start and end times are at midnight but midnight in the USA is anywhere between 5am (East Coast) and 9am (Pacific) here because of the time zone difference.

So you could start at midnight when the contest launches but in the UK the contestant would have to wait until they got up in the morning .... by which time you're in bed. The reality is you both have the same time, just at different times.

The match has to end at one time determined by where the site server is located, it can't end at two different times

down2earth2
Not less time, we are all on 24 hours a day. The reality is you both have the same time, just at different times.
I think you're right.

So if the match starts at 12:00 AM Tuesday where I live on the west coast, That would be 8AM in the UK and Libra could start when she gets up Tuesday morning, and I would also start when I get up Tuesday morning (unless I stay up past midnight).

If the contest ended at 12 AM the next Tuesday, Libra would turn her entry in before she goes to bed Monday night (unless she gets up in time to do it before 8AM Tuesday morning), and I would also have to turn mine in before going to bed Monday night (before midnight). So that works! (I think).

libra
03/14/2005, 02:48 AM
lol, so if I post mine in first, everyone now knows that the first entry will be mine.... I may have to stay up really late that night to turn the tables!

Dave
03/14/2005, 03:36 AM
Because you can now edit your entries before voting starts you could enter an image at any time. Nobody knows for sure except you and the admins which entry is which ... nor should that affect their voting even if they did.

Come on get it on! :)

Well the man that was more than willing to help me because of my 'interesting request'... hasn't come through with anything yet. I sent him another gentle reminder today and still nothing.

1-9, I think d2e2 and I agree that we will try that first option that you posted. Please can we have the high res version that you said that you had on your HD. I guess once we have that, then there is no reason why we can't call this official.

- Participants: (down2earth2 vs. libra)
- Type of Contest: (photoshop)
- Theme or Description: (photo restoration on same photograph)
- Submission Time: (12 pm site time exactly one week from the start once we have the photo and it is all set up)
- Will Participant's Vote? (No, participants will not vote)
- What are the stakes? (bragging rights - agreed d2e2?)

Oh yes, going to have to get into the fighting talk thing too hey.... d2e2! Gonna whip your butt!

Hey d2e2 haven't seen you around for ages, so I anticipate some brilliance from you tomorrow. I have officially reuploaded my image about 10 times now (the last time because I suddenly realised that the lady had a serious bruise around her neck, think I may have strangled her without realising it - sorry 1-9...)

Next time we choose an easier image okay? One with faces that are a tad more legible because I have mangled and remangled the current ones more times than I care to remember over the past week.

Okay, enough waffling, I really popped in here to wish you the best of luck - honestly (though you hardly need it!!!)
