I've been working on my colorizations lately and frankly my skin tones still suck but I keep plucking away. Can you guys be very critical of this image please....
hmmmm well all that shadow looking stuff wasn't visible until I uploaded it but pick on me anyway lol
Wellllllllllllllll
Okay the shadow needs fixing .... take some of the red out of it and match it more to her body outline.
Her hair needs less red as do her cheeks and eyebrow, cut down the light reflection on her face but try to add more of a sheen to her skin tones which are very good (they don't suck at all!) .... it just doesn't look like a made up model's skin would look, more like "normal" skin. Check her teeth, they look a litle too red also. Then try to make the jewellery stand out more ....
Remind me not to challenge you to a colorisation .... :)

LOL Thank ya. I'll work on all of that. I'm practicing to challenge the master. hehehe
I love to get slaughtered I guess.

Okay...the overall tone of the image is too red. The hair, the skin tones, the dress...everying is the same reddish tint. I'd remove some of the red from the hair and get a more gold color. If I'm correct, this is Marilyn Monroe...right? Her hair should be a more platinum blonde...at least that's the way I've always pictured her. The eyebrows would then need to be toned to more closely match the hair color. The teeth need to have the red tint removed. I'd also get rid of the reddish shadow over the eyelids. Take some of the red from her earrings and go for a more goldish color...same with the broach on her dress. I think if you remove some of the red from the skin tones you would then be able to leave the dress the red color that you've chosen. Marilyn Monroe had very fair skin...almost translucent. If you remove some of the red from the skin tones you'll also, in the process, remove the reddish color of the shadowing. You want to try to stay away from an entire image having the same tone...in this case red. It become overwhelming to the viewer's eye and makes the image uninteresting because everything appears the same...there's nothing for the eye to be drawn to. You may be able to resolve some of the skin issues by reducing the opacity of the red layer.
You keep at it, CJ...as hard as you practice you'll be kicking butt and taking names in colorization in no time!

Thanks Silky. For some reason what I see in Photoshop is not the same thing I am seeing in this browser after I uploaded the image. Does that make sense? The "redness" wasn't there and her hair was like a gorgeous blonde I don't know how thats possible but it seems to be more red here. It's weird.
Ok I'm going back to square one AGAIN!!! lol

All I can say is just...Wow! I loose dexterity, common sense and all other things I hold dear when it comes to colorization! Your try two is wonderful. But I am by no means an expert in this area...only an artist. My eye has found it's place to rest, mission accomplished.
Well done!

Thanks ldg.
Try two didn't mean it was my second try it meant the second one I posted lol. Believe me I throw them away trash a ton of them. Start over a million times.... I've been just doing different ones over and over and not even saving them for weeks. I am just determined to get it right. Unfortunately, my perfectionist personality is going just may kill me first LOL.

LOL Not as many as I have the last few days I'm sure. You know you are the master :p Gotta post for us.
That was a MAJOR improvement!
Try putting some jewels into the earring and brooch rather than have it a single color that matches her hair too much .... I'm sure there'd be Diamonds (being a girls best friend and all that) :)

The second one looks a lot better. But its still lacking variations in skin tones. Some times its easier to get a good source pic of a nice head shot with good skin tone variations and sample the colors. Light, medium and dark. You can also do this with hair color, lips, lipstick, make up and eyes. I usually go to revlon or maybelline for the hair and makeup.
Or you can follow this tutorial on skin tones and make your own....

Wow! This looks terrific! Thanks for sharing! It was a good exercise for me to look over your "first" try, and analyse it for improvements, and then read Dave and Silky's much more perceptive anlysis. I missed a few things to be sure.
I have one question. Dave suggested giving the skin more of a "sheen". Hmm.. What exactly does that mean, and how would you do it? I think of copying all to a new layer, applying a gaussian blur, maybe a soft-light blending mode, and then restircting it with a mask or something. But would that be a sheen or a soft-glow? Sheen like satin? Sheen like gleam? Luster? Shimmer? Gloss? Sheen like Martain Sheen?

I'm not too sure what he meant, I percieved it as meaning it was kind of dull looking. Maybe he will tell us. It's all just trial and error D2E at least for me. I do it over and over and over. And when I get tired I show them, LOL
Hates diamonds BTW
The answer is Barry Sheen (go look him up) :p
I think I can show you an example of what I meant, of course it's by the mistress of colorisations .....

I have the same problem, my doctor recommends .... :)
I think trying d2e2's suggestion of adding a layer and applying a touch of gaussian blur might work .... that or some Revlon body creme.
calamityjane
02/08/2005, 02:15 PM
Ok Round 3..... Gausian Blur trial... I like it
now go to contest ..... :)
Have you fixed her teeth, red on the web is such a problem .... and the jewelry or jewellery needs some stonework, even if they're not diamonds, but that might call for a change in the colour of her dress to keep it matched. So it's rubies .... Babe Rubies! LOL

As a possible option I'll pass along a suggestion I had from Castoroy to improve the look of some gold jewelry in one of my colorizations.
You can also make the gold nice and shiny by lowering the opacity of it a little and adding some white highlights on a new layer and setting the blendmode to overlay and lower the opacity....
Kewl Thanks I'll try that too D2E
Ok Round 4 ...I think... I fixed the teeth. And tried D2E's suggestion with the gold jewelry. Not bad.
Guess what guys I have figured out that it Helps when correcting things peoples suggestions to have saved these in STEPS. Now I don't have to go completely back to square one everytinme

Yeah I've noticed. Looks good you see how all that garbage surrounding her shows up?
If you'll look really close there are also jewels in her hair over her ear and you can barely see the one on her other ear below her cheek. But I love it I like the lightness of yours, mine got alot darker with the multiply layer after i flattened it.
ooohhhhh and how do you get that color for the jewels?

I did a quick clone job to remove the stuff around her...I see I missed some spots. That's what I get for doing such a quick job. Same with the jewels on the ears...I didn't take the time to do the details. I did do some adjusting of the image BEFORE I colorized it...adjusted the brightness and contrast to start with an all around lighter image. For the jewels I removed most of the yellow and most of the red...leaving the blue layer. I then added back a little red and yellow till I got the color I wanted. I also adjusted the level of the jewels, to brighten them a bit. If I took more time with this it would have come out much better. I think where you should start, CJ, is to adjust the image BEFORE you color it. Brighten it...adjust the saturation and contrast until you start with an image that's brighter than the original. I also did more than just multiply at the end. I did that several times...did an overlay layer...did a couple other layer adjustments to brighten it up a bit as well. I can see that coloring in Photoshop is going to be much more involved. :D
She was a real hottie. :cool2: Both look great to me. I'm really digging the vintage feel, Sil.

I did my Marilyn Monroe image using part of my tutorial and part experimentation. Since I'm brand new to Photoshop (a PSP user for 5 years), it really is a very different thing colorizing in Photoshop. I can tell you I used the three color method...blue, red and gold...changed the blend mode to "color" on each of the layers...applied a mask to each of the color layers...masked the red from the eyes...and masked the yellow from the color portion of the eyes and the lips. After that, depending on the image, I lowered the opacity of the color layers...to achieve as close to the result I wanted as possible. Then...if I didn't like the hair color, I masked out a bit more of the red (on the Marilyn Monroe picture) to achieve the blonder color. I added some pink touches to the cheeks, tip of the nose, and chin. Then, my tutorial says to merge the layers, duplicate the merged copy, and set the duplicate layer to multiply. I did that as well. But, I still didn't have the result I wanted. This is where the experimentation comes in. I merged layers again, duped the merged layer...set it to overlay...dropped the opacity of the overlay layer...merged the layers again...duped the layer again...and set blend mode to hard light. I duped the image several times...using different blend modes, until I achieved the look I wanted. That's how I did the Marilyn image. So, I probably used about 85% of the tutorial as it is...and then the last 15% was experimentation, adjusting and tweaking.
I have an idea....maybe one evening we can meet in the chat room. We'll pick an image that we can all colorize, and we'll walk through the process together. That way, I can share with you EXACTLY what I do, when I do it...to see if you get the same result. Let me know if you're interested. :)

Yes I used Silky's tutorial. But like she said it doesn't seem to work completely in Photoshop. So since I've been working on them I do all of the things she said from the tutorial and then start working on the image by trial and error. I find it helpful to save my work in various steps, naming them step1 and step2 etc. So when something goes to the toilet I don't have to start over I can just go back to a specific point. I have spent ALOT of time on trial and error though.

I've done quite alot of Photoshop colourisations over the last 18 months and could never get a handle on the 3 layer Silky method (used the CMYK Curves method with hand painting to get colour gradients) but recently I have sat down and got stuck into it. For fleshtones it is probably the one and only way to go. I still use the Curves method for everythig else in an image ,yep eyes, lips and hair as well. But like Silky mentioned everyone ends up fine tuning a technique that works for oneself, experimenting is great practice and fun . Why are all the great classic movie star images I like to colour always slightly damaged? Life wasn't meant to be easy I suppose.

Very nice work, dyezza!
And Mr Goat...lovely!! If you use the CMYK method for everything but the skin tones, perhaps we could talk you into writing a short tutorial for that method as well. I'm so unfamiliar with Photoshop, I have no idea what you're talking about, but would LOVE to give it a try. I do agree with you that everyone has their own "personal" way of tweaking and fine tuning an image...and experimentation is the best way to find what works for you. I also agree that the three color method is THE way to go for the perfect skin tones...as evidenced by your lovely work. :)

I have total faith in your tutorial writing abilities...and I think I'll even re-write my colorization tutorial specifically for Photoshop (once I get a total handle on the in's and out's of Photoshop that I've yet to learn). As for the skin tones, I always say that any image that you color that has a person in it...the skin tones are the absolute MOST important part of the image. It's the first thing people look at, and if they are off in any way, it stands out like a cactus among the daisies. :)
Another lovely image from you...I can see I'll not be entering many colorizations until I get Photoshop mastered. :)

Really nice work, msfrigyfrog! I agree with you about the addiction...it seems that once you get started and see what great images you can produce, it's really hard to stop! Definitely a great piece of work...especially for a first effort!
Are we talking about Silky's colorization tutorial? Easy? Maybe once you get the knack for it (I hope anyway).
It is, d2e2...I promise! :)
We'll try to arrange a meeting time this week so we can go through the steps of colorizing in Photoshop....:)

Anyone up for a colorization chat early Friday evening...say 6:30 p.m. CST? That'd be 4:30 p.m. PST and 7:30 p.m. EST. Or we could do it just about any time on Saturday that would be handy for you guys.
Thoughts?
Early Friday ....? :)
Damn Earth rotation, but I'll see what I can do to stay awake.
Give some thought as to keeping things under control, these chat sessions can get out of control if everyones trying to say something at the same time .....

This sounds really cool. I hope I don't work too late on friday. I have Saturday off. any chance of doing it both days? Also, how would this work if we wanted to see someone's progress? Maybe we could hook up on yahoo or msn messenger and use the file transfer feature... just a thought. That might be too complicated to set up though.

We'll make arrangements to suit everyone. I don't mind having a colorization chat more than once....so if you can't make one I'll try to arrange another time that would be convenient for ya. :)

Any time Saturday would be good. I can do the Friday time, but I'll have to break some plans. I really want to do this so if Friday works for everyone else, I'll be there. It's darn near impossible to find the "perfect" time for everyone.
This should be great!

If you can't make Friday, I don't mind having another session on Saturday (probably afternoon). Let's see how many folks are available on Friday....:)
I need to find an image that we can all use. I also think sharing our progress is a great idea. What I might do is start a thread in the Critique This or Testing forum, where we can all post images as we progress through the process. That way, if anyone is completely off, we can nip it in the bud right where they start to go astray...:)

Okay guys, I'm afraid I'm going to have to postpone the colorization chat till next week. I had a small medical procedure done yesterday and it's making it difficult for me to sit in my desk chair for any length of time. We'll plan the chat for next Friday...same time as listed above...and again on Saturday if someone can't make it next Friday. Sorry about this...I was hoping I'd be back on my feet soon enough to handle it this week. :(

did I miss it? :( I'm having trouble logging into the chat room for some reason. Is there still a chat thing scheduled for tomorrow? (saturday) I'll be using a different computer and see if that works.
