having trouble with gif files. when ever i open up a gif file its indexed and i can't drag it to a new window. can somebody please tell me why this is...

GIFs are indexed, up to 256 colours, that's the way it is. To be able to use them in other images, you must first switch them to RGB mode (Image>Mode>RGB).
