I intended to enter this in the vegetable substitution contest. I'm new, but there is no excuse for not reading. I've never entered one of these Photoshop contests before so I would really like a critique on this. Please, all constructive comments appreciated.
Suppi, I gotta be honest I'm not at all sure what kind of vegetable you've put into this image, something to do with the dreadlocks maybe? Is it the earring? I really don't know.
I'm sorry
Whatever it is you have sitting on her head is on the side, it's two dimensional against the three dimensions of the contours of the head, there's a line around the brown part that makes it a totally seperate thing from the rest of the head. I dunno it looks wrong.
But what do I know? :)
(Admins if this comment is in the least bit upsetting kill it, it's not meant to be)

I like it. THey look like tomatoes! That being said, they look 3d enough to me. Only think I would change is the greenish hair. It seems to look a bit more like filters than painting. The green hair could also be a bit darker. The crackly look that the tomatoes have is a real bonus. Keep it up!

Hi Suppi,
It is a gourd/squash right?
The earing, maybe a sweet pepper, is a nice added touch. I would have added a bit more shadow to it, especialy the stem, blending it into the ear a bit more, also applying a bit more texture as you did with the gourd.
The gourds orange/pinkish color is superb & the crazing is a remarkable touch. the original head scarf trailing down must have been hard to decide what to do with. Perhaps incorporating the gourd's trailing vines and leaves? The greens etc at the stem side of the gourd and that trailing down are in my opinion over "filtered", using the filter and the going over with a small blending brush and a paint brush could reduce it's starkness in relation to the original painting.
This is a great "missed" submission, it would have surely given one a run for its money! Look forword to your next, Oh, and welcome aboard PA!
Edit: Hey youv'e been here alot longer than me...duhhhh  Sorry!

I like this! I'm guessing that the green of the hair is asparagus (if I'm wrong I stand corrected...:D). It is a bit over filtered and would have been a little more recognizable if it was blended and softened a bit. I like the little gourd you used for the earring, but would have added a bit of shadow to darken it a bit to more closely match the shadow of the side of her face. I can't decide what you used on the top of her head but it really does blend in well with the painting itself. I'm sorry you missed the deadline with this one. I think it would have done just fine in the contest! I hope we'll get to see more of your work sometime soon!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Looks like I got you all guessing. I wasn't sure if the vegetables were supposed to be recognizable or not. The thing on top of her head is a "turban squash". It's like a gourd. The photo I used was a photo of a drawing or watercolor. I added the crackle lines to blend it in with the painting. The long things hanging down are asparagus. You got it Silky. The original painting, by Vermeer, has a knot in her head scarf and the scarf hangs down in back. The image of the asparagus that I used was very blurry after I enlarged the tiny file. I used one of the filters that gives an artistic effect. I forget which one. I don't think it's "over filtered" as I don't know how I could do that. I think it was just too blurry to begin with. The earring was a little squash of some kind. An unusual kind. You're right about that one needing blending. It looks like it is not attached to her ear. And I had a hard time blending shadows on the turban squash to make it look like it is sitting on her head. Of course, being a drawing, it may have been a little flat anyway.
This is really hard to do. I assume the addition is supposed to look like it was always there with the colors and shadows blending with the painting. I tried my best, but any tips on technique would be appreciated. Also any tips on where to get a good quality image to work with would be appreciated. This was a first try for me. It was lots of fun.

Thanks for the welcome IDG40, I joined a while back, but have been away a long time. I just came back. So I'll consider it a warm welcome back. I'm just now trying to figure out how to do things here. I'm not real good at Photoshop tricks. Trying to learn. I know the asparagus does not blend in. Also too bright. I just need way too much time to get this right.

Hey Dave,
Your comments are fine. I'm just not sure about your behind shining in my face:D
The turban squash is a silly looking thing for sure. But I needed something that looked like the big knot on top of her head. I thought it did the trick. It looks like it's sliding off the side, but then her topknot sort of leans to the side and I had to cover it. Let's face it, putting vegetables where they are not supposed to be does make pretty silly pictures.
Thanks for your feedback. I'm going to learn how to do this yet.

Suppi, you did a REALLY nice job of blending the veggies in to match the feel of the painting! If this is your first attempt, then I hope you'll keep at it, because this doesn't look like an inexperienced photoshop. It was well thought out, and constructed, and with a some minor adjustments could really have done well! Keep it up!
