Does anyone know why Quark 6 files get so large?
In the past versions (and in simple logical theory) a quark file wouldn't be larger than a couple megs when all images were linked rather than embedded. NOW, in quark 6, I have files that get to be 200+ megs and only because a master page image is repeated throughout the job.
Anyone have any insight?

Wow. That is odd. Sorry, Claven, no experience here. I switched to Indesign rather than pay the Quark upgrade pricing. I'll do some digging though.

I think on i'm starting to figure this out. When i originally loaded the software i set all my prefs. In doing so, I specified the color profiles i wanted to as the default view. Somehow in doing this I turned off the lowres picture preview (i see all my linked images clear and crisp like in their native programs). I did not do this intentionally, but LOVE this compared to the low res previews.
I am guessing that this increases my file sizes (duh:D). I have to figure out how to turn this off now.
Anyone know what OPI stands for?

Open Prepress Interface
Previews would make sense.

WOW, that was trippy! i start to filter through the online help for quark6 (since no book comes with the program) and I find the section on image previews. It pointed me to 6 or 7 places THAT DON'T EXIST in my program!!!! I called Quark and there simple answer was - upgrade to 6.5! GO FIGURE! They even said that the file size issue is a source of many tech calls and "some people" resolve the issue with an upgrade, and some don't.

That's Quark..and that's why Jolt is a happy Indesign user.
My brother just started a new job as a Production Artist at a major publishing house. Guess what? Pure Indesign on Mac G5's in the 'entire' building. Not a single PC to be seen anywhere. He hasn't used a machine that fast -ever-.
Anyways, from what I saw and learned from him, Indesign is basically Illustrator for pages. If you're good at Illustrator, you'll blaze on Indesign intuitively. He's a convert and judging from his tone and enthusiasm, so am I. This will be my next app to learn for sure.

Actually. Indesign is a lot like Xpress, The transition is pretty seamless. I had no trouble with it. There are a lot of similarities with Illustrator though. In fact, you can draw in Indesign with illustrator-like tools.
