To add a new layer below the current layer, hold down Command (PC: Control) when you click the new layer icon.
Let's keep this going :D
Hold down the spacebar to make the "Hand" appear and allow easy canvas movement.
this isnt a tip but an easter egg type thing if you hold down alt then click on the pallette options (in the layers panel) in stead of the options showing you get a little wizzard thingy... useless but cute

Hold down Command (Mac) or Control (PC) and type a [ and ] to move layers up and down the layers palette. Add the shift key and you can move your layer to the top or bottom.
This is fun!
One of my most used keyboard shortcuts:
Lasso the area you want to modify.
CMD/CTL+J copies selection to a new layer.
Another favorite:
Have an intricate layer mask that you want to duplicate to another layer? Select the layer you want to create the mask on. Drag the intricate Layer Mask to the "Add Layer Mask" icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. -BOOM!- your Mask is duplicated exactly!
Keep it goin' peeps!
-B
Hit CTRL-S to save your work!
Ok, I got nuthin'.
PSP
F12 - save file as
plus
my default save format is as a PSP (PSD to you pros) file ..... just in case! :)

Maybe I am dense, but it does not work for me (PC) CTRL-a is select all. I must be missing something.

I can't get this to work either, maybe i need more sleep, anyhow, this remind me a bit of PS 3.0 ( I think) if you clicked on the about (under help) on April 1st, you would get a silly pic until 12:00 noon.

Command/Control-[ should move a layer up in the layers palette and Command/Control-] should move a layer down in the layers palette.
Option/Alt-[ should highlight the next layer up in the layers palette and Option/Alt-] should highlight the next layer down in the layers palette.
maybe it's a Mac-only thing *shrug*

old faithful... CTRL+spacebar while using practically any tool to get zoom in tool, or CTRL+ALT+spacebar to zoom out (used to be only CTRL+ALT on older versions)...VERy handy if you do not already use these.
sorry I can not remember the MAC keys, been a while since I have taken a course.

I have dug out the quick reference card (PC ver7) and here is what it says....
Ctrl + [or] selects next layer down/up
For the life of me I can not figure this one out...what do they mean by [or]? Just plain Ctrl+ or Ctrl- zooms in or out. Can anyone help here, I would find this one useful.
To be honest Version 7 is the first version that I have not read the manual. Guess I should try to find time, there is so much that I do not know or use...clipping layers, new fill or adjustment layers etc. and what the heck is a pattern maker? There are just so many shortcuts, how is this for an obscure one... Makes protractor...measure tool + alt + drag end point.

Hold Option/Alt whilst using the lasso tool to temporarily access Polyganal/Freehand, depending on which you're currently using.

Go on I'll go for the classic:
Apple/Ctrl + alt/option + Shift + '~'
Make a selection based on the luminance of the image (ie White is 100% selected Black is 0% selected all greys graduated in between.
"The Claw"
(And that's not "I'll get you Penelope Pitstop")

To change multiple type layers, link them all together, then hold down the Shift key and make a chnage in the Options Bar such as a different font, and all the type layers wll change at once.

d'oh, now I get it...thanks Jolt! Jolt to the rescue as per usual.
Here are some quickies that make applying the same adjustments to images a snap! (If you're not using Adjustment Layers.)
CMD/CTL + OPT/ALT + L = Previous Levels adjustment
CMD/CTL + OPT/ALT + M = Previous Curves
CMD/CTL + OPT/ALT + U = Previous Hue & Sat
CMD/CTL + OPT/ALT + F = Previous Filter w/settings

For those of you that use guides....
Hold down Alt (Option on Mac) as you're dragging a guide to change between a horizontal and vertical guide.
To add a guide exactly halfway horizontally or vertically, choose View>New Guide and in the dialog box, ignore the current unit of measurment (inches or whatever) and enter "50%" for the position and choose either horizontal or vertical orientaiton. Regardless of your unit of measurement, the guide will be centered.

My fave Dave. This of course works for all percentages.
Hold Shift whilst dragging guides from the Ruler and the guide will be constrained to the ruler ticks.

It'd be nice if guides could be angled, so you can measure vanishing points etc.
Hey Dave, just saw your article on Layer Comps in the Spring 2004 issue of Create Magazine. Good stuff and your writing style is easy to read through. kudos :cool2:
